Balloons are air tight bags that could be inflated by gas or air. Balloons are normally produced in different colors, size and shapes to delight both the children and the adults during any family functions are entertainments like a birthday party. Balloons are lighter than aircrafts and are flied without any propulsion systems. It is often lifted by inflation with gas lighter than air or with heated air. Balloon was invented in France in the late 18th century by two paper makers named Jacques and Joseph Montgolfier. They found that when paper bags were filled with air they started rising.

They started experimenting with lots of other materials like cloth, paper and silk. Their first public demonstration was in June 1783 with a light balloon made of cloth lined with paper. Later in the same year Jacques flew a balloon made of silk which was coated with rubber varnish and filled with hydrogen. The toy balloons made today are entirely different from those of early days which were fully made of rubber. Natural latex a mixture of rubber substance is suspended in water and this when exposed to air, heat or certain chemicals clots. To improve its strength it is vulcanized by various methods.

Printing any image, logo or names involve several steps. Balloons are inflated first to allow even printing. For this a worker has to manually place the balloon in the inflating device and then the required picture is printed carefully. Promotional balloons are printed using several methods. These depend on the required size, quantity and quality. All balloons are printed in the inflated state contrary to the belief that balloons are hand stamped in the deflated condition. The first and the most popular method used is the offset printing. In this the ink is placed in the image correctly on the plate.

This plate is transferred to the printing drum in the reverse position. The balloon is then rolled on the printing drum thus getting the required image in a correct way. Another method is also widely used in balloon printing called the silk screening. This method can be used both in flat or inflated balloons. A suitable silk screen is selected. The required image is then sketched in the screen. This screen is laid on the promotional balloon and the ink is forced through the image area in the screen onto the balloon. The non image area does not allow the ink to pass through, thereby putting ink only in the image area.

In the case of inflated balloons, the balloons are slightly compressed to form a flat surface. Then it is placed in the device before applying the ink. Latex balloons are first inflated during the printing process. It is then screen printed and deflated. It then undergoes drumming process where it is rotated in the industrial dryers to shrink them back to make it look new. Because of such lengthier process the latex balloons are costlier than the unprinted balloons. During the process of printing the balloons are inflated only 75% of the total capacity. This provides proper tension for ink transfer.
